This two-grille look distinguishes all of the water-cooled Vanagons from the older 1980 - 1983 air cooled models.Like 1984 (and through 1987), the emblem on left side of the hatch included a VW logo followed by the word VolkswagenAs with all Vanagons beginning in 1982 through 1991, the 1985 models hadremovable blackplasticcooling air intake grilles on each side ofthe van, behind the rear-most windows.

VW expert informed me rear matress not included and air box has opening that expert thinks ROUS may have created, local expert had an opinion, it was made to let the monster 4 cyl breath a wee bit better.... either way it is in no danger of being confused with the legions of concours 1985 Vanagons that all the experts hav, this is just a lowly unmoleste, generally cared for plain Jane(sorry Jane) that all the true Dead Heads with no money would be forced to drive, hoping to make gas money and enjoy the show hopping up and down on Shakedown Street... oh yeah the Dead are known for more than Touch of Gray, at least that's what another kind of expert told me.
