Description:

1987 Volkswagen Bus/Vanagon Syncro

1987 Vanagon Syncro GL hardtop with basic camper interior, comfortable fold down bed, custom storage and space to bring along or leave behind stove, fridge, bicycles, depending on each trip plan. My particular preference when going for the full remote camping experience with the wife and kids is a Coleman 2 burner stove and an Engel 12v fridge but I leave that up to you, those 2 items are not included in the sale. Kids are negotiable. (Just kidding). Unlike the full camper Westfalia version, I enjoyed the modular simplicity aproach and extra space when going for the day / picnic or let's see how many bicycles and kayaks we can carry experiment. This Vanagon is an amazing and versatile do it all machine. Strong running 2.1 Liter water cooled engine. This is a unique custom vanagon Syncro with several upgrades: Volks Cafe/ Van Cafe Heavy Duty Syncro lift springs, Old Man EMU Shocks. Mercedes ML320 16X8 alloy wheels. The suspension is a dream on this van. Very tight and solid. Very stable on the highway (even in wind with bikes and fantastic offroad with a syncro traction that requires no attention and gets you, your family AND your gear through snow, mud or any slippery condition like no other vehicle. I am not a rock crawler type of driver and take care of my rig, particularly when bringing my kids along. They always made fun of my very conservative driving style, but we have been to some remote off the beaten path places and always made it back without breakdowns. The interior has been completely redone. The front seats are beautiful gray Recaro seats. The carpet is clean and the door panels are custom units that match the recaro seats. The rear has painted custom fitted cabinets and fold down bed from a Country Homes camper conversion (82 Vanagon donor). The rear seat/bed was also recently reupholstered to match the Recaro seats in two tone gray. The exterior is eye catching with the lifted heavy duty offroad suspension and nice rims complemented with custom steel tube bumpers (front and rear), with 2 inch receiver hitch in back AND front allowing for limitless bring along toy options. I just had the bumpers completely stripped down to bare metal and professionaly painted with high quality bedliner. The front bumper is designed to fit a 9000-12000 pound electric winch. (Winch not included in the sale). If a winch is not used, a lightweight diamond aluminum plate keeps everything looking flush and that space can also become a compartment to carry a small tool box, air compressor, etc. Exhaust has been replaced with a much nicer stainless steel upgrade from Rocky Mountain (now merged with Van Cafe) and it looks nice. The front turn signals and tail lights are the smoked style. This is a go anywhere camping, biking, kayaking or anything you want to bring along-machine! This Syncro gets tons of attention on the streets and people always approach you and share their VW stories with you. It has a rear locking differential which works just fine but honestly, I have rarely used it and never gotten stuck anywhere because the syncro works so well. Van drives nice, gears shift smoothly and Syncro has been trouble free. The body is nice but not perfect with a small dent on the front right side that is easily fixed. It came like that to me and I never bothered since reliability was more important to me. The actual mileage is estimated around 165K but cannot be confirmed 100% as the odometer was replaced with one that reads 58000 miles. Taking everything into account, I feel this van is in good condition and has plenty of life and adventures awaiting but as with any used vehicle any prospective buyer would be encouraged to inspect it. It has been reliable around town and on trips and enjoyable for me to drive and it is a very useful and unique vehicle that can go most anywhere and gets lots of attention. I have an identical 1987 Original Westfalia 2wd Pop Up top Vanagon GL with pretty rough body but an impecable and complete all original grey Westfalia interior that I was going to use to merge both vans into the ultimate AWD Syncro Westfalia Pop-Up Camper but my plans have changed and I might consider selling it as well as a package if that is of interest to a particular buyer. This auction is ONLY for one vehicle, the one shown on the pictures.
