Full Service History & Documentation

This Porsche Turbo 930 Coupe (September 1979 production date) was sold new by Valley Porsche Audi in Spokane, Washington on January 31,1980 to Walter Balinski Jr. of Goleta CA. Mr. Balinski, a mechanical engineer, drove the car approximately 13,000 miles until 1990 when he sold the car to the second owner in Santa Barbara, California who drove the car just over 1,000 miles until November 1998 when his brother, the current owner, bought it.

The car has been garage-kept and very well-cared for by its three owners since new. It comes with all its documentation and accessories such as the original sales brochure, color chart, window sticker, Certificate of Authenticity, owners manuals, maintenance and warranty books, burgundy envelope, radio documents, keys, service records, tool kit, air compressor, jack, spare and tire changing gloves.

The car presents beautifully for a 38 year old car. The paint is excellent showing typical stone chips and minor wear consistent with 26,000 miles of use. The panel gaps and fit are excellent and all factory labels/stickers are intact. The interior finishes are original and excellent, showing very little wear, e.g., the driver's seat bolster shows no visible wear and the leather dash pad is not warped.

The car retains all its original details such as the thermal reactors on the exhaust system, the radio and Hirschmann antenna, the original protective floor mats, etc. - all there as delivered in 1979. A Clarion equalizer was added decades ago and enhances the sound of the original radio.

In addition to routine maintenance such as oil changes and filters, previous service includes a recent new clutch assembly and engine-out major service in January 2017 and also ignition wires, spark plugs, distributor cap, rotor & rotor, ignition coil, oil tank sending unit, air & fuel filters, oil & filter, engine insulation pad, various oil lines, transaxle oil, valve adjustment, and more, Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 tires (2015), main heater blower, battery, hood struts, A/C compressor, R134A conversion (original compressor included), A/C receiver/dryer, top end reseal, head studs, turbocharger rebuild and rear wheel bearings.

This 1979 model benefits from the significant upgrades made in 1978: enlarging the engine to 3.3 liters; adding an air-to-air intercooler which helped increase power output to 296 hp; the rear 'whale tail' spoiler was re-profiled and raised slightly to make room for the intercooler; and Porsche upgraded the brakes to units similar to those used on the 917 racecar. All of these improvements helped Porsche take the fight to offerings from Ferrari and Lamborghini.

As first-generation 911 Turbos gain popularity with Porsche collectors, well-maintained, highly original examples have become increasingly difficult to find.

This is a rare opportunity to purchase an early Porsche 911 Turbo with:

- Desirable and classic silver and black, low mileage and highly original,

- Three owners (two in California), current owner for past 18 years,

- Window sticker, books, tools, service records, etc.

About the 1979 Porsche 930 Turbo:

In 1974 Porsche introduced the first production turbocharged 911. Adapting turbo-technology originally developed for the 917 Can-Am cars Porsche created what was internally known as the 930. The body shape is distinctive thanks to wide wheel-arches to accommodate the wide tires, and a large rear spoiler often known as a ''whale tail'' on the early cars, and ''tea-tray'' on the later ones. Starting out with a 3.0 L engine with 256 horsepower these early cars are known for their exhilarating acceleration coupled with challenging handling and turbo lag. For 1978, capacity rose to 3.3 liter with 296 horsepower, and an intercooler was added which was placed under the large rear spoiler. 0-60 mph the 930 was clocked at a blazing 5.0 seconds flat, with a top speed of 162 mph. The price for a new 930 in 1979 was close to $40,000, and its performance put it in direct competition with Ferrari and Lamborghini.

Changing emissions regulations forced Porsche to withdraw the 930 from the US in 1980. Their expectation that the 928 would replace the 911 kept them from developing the 930 for the US market. When the 911 remained Porsche's bestseller through the 80s Porsche re-introduced the 930 to the US market in 1986 with an emission-controlled engine producing 278 hp.

In 1976 production figures of the 930 qualified it for FIA Group 4 competition, with the racing version called the Porsche 934. Many participated at Le Mans and other endurance races. The wilder FIA Group 5 version called Porsche 935 evolved from the 2.1 L RSR Turbo of 1974. Fitted with a slope nose, the 600+ hp cars were campaigned in 1976 by the factory, winning the world championship title. Private 935 teams went on to win many races, like Le Mans in 1979, and continued to compete successfully with the car well into the 1980s until the FIA and IMSA rules were changed.
