Description:

1963 Lincoln Continental Convertible

As an alternate to Cadillac's convertibles and those from Chrysler's Imperial, Ford offered its Lincoln Continental Convertible. A four-door droptop, this unit is one of 3,138 examples made in 1963.

Made in Ford's Wixom, Michigan factory (VIN code Y) on September 15, 1962. It was originally sold in the Kansas City, Missouri sales district (code DSO 43).

Finished in a silver-blue, the car's paint and trim are in overall very good order and has brilliant shine. The bodywork, overall, is straight and solid, including a while, power-folding top. The front doors open conventionally while the rear doors open coach-style. The chrome bumpers fit tightly to the body overall. This car has been re-engineered to accept an air suspension during a previous restoration, with air tanks hidden in the trunk. front brakes have been upgraded to disc.

This Lincoln rolls on narrow-sidewall whitewall tires, each one mounted on a steel wheel and topped with factory wheel covers. The covers are in excellent order while the tires are in very good condition.

Under the forward-hinged hood is a 430 CID V-8 engine, one of the Mercury, Edsel and Lincoln line (code MEL). Backing this motor is Ford's Turbo-Drive three-speed automatic transmission (code 4) and a 2.89:1 rear end (code 1). Driver convenience features include air-conditioning, power steering, power brakes, power locks and power windows.

Inside are striking new 2 tone leather front and rear bench seats, complete with fold-down center armrests. The contrasting carpet is in similar great shape insulation was placed under the newer parts. The three-spoke steering wheel looks like futuristic for the period while the silver-blue dashboard and white interior door panels have faux wood inserts for warmth. The courtesy lights still work, too. Horn and power door locks are inop. A column-mounted shifter and a factory AM radio round out the interior.

Changes were made to enlarge the available passenger room on the 1963 Lincoln Continental. This involved an instrument panel redesign to allow for more knee and leg room, relocating the front seat forward slightly to improve rear seat leg room, and designing a new deck lid and reconfiguring the luggage compartment to hold more luggage. Changes to the engine provided 20 additional horsepower, and several optional items were made standard in 1963. In line with a number of vehicles in the United States, the electrical charging system introduced an alternator, replacing the generator.

Documentation includes a 1961-1963 Lincoln Convertible Top repair and adjustment guide; assorted receipts and invoices; a list of Lincoln-specific parts and repair companies and a list of Lincoln production numbers between 1961 and 1967.

Competition to this Lincoln in 1963 included Bentley's S3 Continental Drophead Coupe, Cadillac's Eldorado Biarritz Convertible and Imperial's Crown Convertible.
