1976 Mercedes-Benz Other
Vehicle Details1976 Mercedes-Benz 240D was a one-family owned and garage-kept car before I purchased it. The car has spent all of its life in NC, so there's extremely little evidence of rust on the body and the underside is still really solid (pics above). The car came with factory air conditioning which still blows ice cold. The car always easily cold starts after letting the glow plugs warm up about fifteen seconds; it has never not cranked up and reliably ran. The original factory radio has been replaced by an aftermarket Sony cassette player. Recent repairs include a new battery, oil change, oil filter, cleaning the oil bath air filter, new radiator fluid, new radiator cap, new master cylinder, new brake hoses, brake calipers & brake pads, new rear sway bar, new weatherstripping around the windshields, an AC recharge, new alternator, AC & power steering belts, and new tires. The car rides and drives extremely well and gets good fuel mileage. The only mechanical flaws are a puff of smoke when the engine is first cranked up that goes away as it gets warmed up, likely related to the fuel/air mixture. After reaching running temperature, the 240D's engine runs smoothly and stays around 175 degrees, even with the AC on during a hot summer day. The transmission shifts reliably. The other item that needs to be repaired is the speedometer (most likely a worn out cable), which quit working about two years ago, so the odometer mileage reads a little less than the actual mileage, but is still remarkably low for a car its age.The maple yellow paint is factory original and still looks good for a 46-year-old car. There are some small chips along with some small dings in the sheetmetal, but nothing major. There are no missing emblems. The chrome on the bumpers is OK, but not very mirror-like. The black plastic bumper pieces are all intact and in good shape. The maple yellow MB hubcaps are all in good shape. The front and rear windshields are nice with no cracks. The interior is in very good condition with no major wear on the dashboard or instrument cluster. The seats in the front and back have good foam padding and sit very comfortably. The super-durable MB-Tex vinyl seat covers are in very good shape. The carpeting is worn in front of the driver's seat, but the rest is in good shape.
