1949 DeSoto Custom Coupe 2 Door Street Rod

1949 DeSoto Custom Coupe model S-11 Street Rod powered by the original 236 cu. in. in-line Flathead six-cylinder (rated at 112 h.p.) and backed by the legendary 3-speed Hydra-Fluid (or Fluid Drive) manual transmission.

The owner purchased the car from an estate approximately 15 years ago and began an “on-frame” restoration which was completed 5 years and less than 1000 miles ago. It is believed the mileage shown could be the original 48,000. Odometer and speedometer function normally.

The body is very solid and was stripped down to bare metal before the “Toxic Orange” 2-stage urethane paint was applied. According to the owner only two small areas on each lower corner of the doors required new metal to be welded in place. Otherwise, it is the original sheet metal.

Some of the exterior chrome has been replated, including both bumpers and side trim. The windows roll up and down smoothly and the glass is in good condition. Wipers, turn signals, brake lights, and headlights all function.

The stock 236 cu. in. I-6 was not rebuilt to the owner’s knowledge, but treated to a tune-up including new plugs & wires, coil, points, condenser, oil filter, hoses, belts, gas tank and fuel lines. The DeSoto starts easily, runs smoothly, and shows no evidence of burning oil. The Hydra-Fluid transmission shifts smoothly without any issues.

The interior was treated to a tastefully done vinyl roll & pleat along with new carpeting and headliner. The DeSoto retains the 6-volt charging system and all of the gauges function except the fuel level. The heater works along with its controls and an aftermarket JVC AM/FM/CD player with speakers mounted in the door panels was added. The JVC unit is powered by a 12-volt battery mounted in the trunk.

The suspension has had some minor changes that include a Chevrolet 10-bolt rear differential with 3.08:1 open gears. Front end bushings and 4 new shocks were added along with a new ‘stock’ brake system. The new Wheels and tires are 15” American Torque Thrusts with Dakota H/T Definity radial tires measuring 235/70R/15 front and 265/70R/15 rear.

Items which need attention are the horns, original radio, and parking brake.

The legendary DeSoto is a blast to drive and draws attention everywhere it goes.
