Here is a rare opportunity to own a SS 396 Chevelle with only 68,890 documented actual miles inexceptionalcondition for not being a full restoration car with only one repaint. A car that has been put up and driven less 24,000 miles in the last 48 years. I was fortunate to find this car around 6 months ago and I bought it from a gentleman who has had the car since 1972. He is an old man now, and sadly dying of Cancer and Diabetes. He actually began to cry after the sale when I took the car away (I respected that: all those good memories of his youth were leaving with the car in a way). But, the good news is that I am sure who ever buys this car will carry on its legacy and take good care of it so it can be admired for generations to come. He bought the car for NHRA racing and raced the car in the 1970s and 1980s. Other than racing for the most part it was kept inside out of the weather and under a cover, preserving the car.
This car was born with a 396 big block L35 engine and manual 4-speed Muncie transmission, Positraction 3:31 rear axle ratioand also was born with a Holley carburetor (not Quadrajet) and was equipped with the#3866948 high-rise "Corvette intake manifold". The protecto-plate and/or trim tag documents these options. This was the only year a Chevelle was ever equipped with a Holley intake and carburetor on L35 engine, another special feature of this car. In 1967 the Holley carb was no longer offered on the L35 in a Chevelle (all received Quadrajet), making the 1966 Chevelle a special year for the L35 396. Also, for the 1966 Chevelle the L35 396 received forged 10.25:1 dome pistons, forged steel crankshaft, and high flow large port small chamber heads. So, with Holley carb and all forged rotating assembly, this was the best year for L35, especially if the L35 happened to be equipped from GM with the high rise Holley intake and Holley carburetor(same intake and carb used on the 427 390hp engine) like this car was.
Furthermore, not all 1966 Chevelles with L35 396 engine received the Holley carburetor and Corvette intake, many had a Quadrajet. This car was born with Holley, per the protecto-plate "H" code. Later the L35 was detuned and down graded with lower compression ratio along with cast crank, and cast pistons and mandated Quadrajet. In 1966 this was GM's first year for full release of the all new and improved big block engine (replacing the old style W 348 and 409 motors) so the 1966 Chevelle SS was offered with some performance options that would soon after be restricted or taken away. The L35 engine in 1966 was 10.25:1 compression ratio from GM due to the#3872702high flow large port heads with ultra small 98cc combustion chamber. This head not only has a higher compression ratio chamber, but also the large high flow port, not the "peanut port"! The#3872702 heads were ONE YEAR ONLY used only on a 1966 Chevelle, never again on any other year Chevelle since.
When I say this car has only 68,890 miles: I can back this up. It is not being sold as exempt, the title reads actual, and I have a legal odometer disclosure statement on the state of Indiana form that is signed by the prior owner proving the mileage is actual (NOT a roll back at restoration or 168,890 flip over). I also have a lot of documentation on this car such as original protect-o-plate, NCRS documentation, original warranty booklet w/ service records 1966-1970 filled out in the warranty booklet, and the car is listed in the official Chevelle SS 396 registry.
Not only does this car have documented low actual mileage, the GM part numbers are still present stamped in the cars quarter panels, and even on the rocker panel. The car appears to have retained many of its original GM parts such as the steering wheel on it that is not all cracked and wore out like most originals you may find and it is not a reproduction. The car has what appears to be original truck lid, original doors in excellent condition, original quarter panels, along with a lot of other original GM part numbered trim and body parts. The date coded window glass and other interior pieces such as window cranks and door handles, and many other parts appear original. As mentioned, I have the original protect-o-plate and know the history on this car back to when the car was sold by Bradswaw Chevrolet in Cedar City IA to Robert Rynio on 10/17/1965. Another thing that is very neat about this car is that it was one of the very early 1966 models actually built and delivered and sold in 1965, not 1966.
The engine and transmission in this car are numbers matching.Within the last 90 days, the engine block was bored and torque plated honed and new forged Seal Power closed chamber dome pistons installed, along with new cam and lifters, timing set, and new set of plasma moly rings. I have only put around 50 miles on the car since the engine rebuild. During the rebuild the block received new cam and lifters and cylinder head work as performed on Sunnen VG-20 head machine including competition multi-angle valve job and new larger stainless valves 2.190/1.880.With the cam and head work, this engine runs more like a 450hp LS6 car in my opinion, maybe better.
The side-pipes on the car have been on it for decades and look tough! They can easily be removed if you do not like them: the bracket that holds them on to the frame has only two bolts per side and they disconnect from the headers. The Muncie has not only correct 010 main case, but correct 584 side plate, and correct 685 tail housing. The camshaft installed is 224/232 duration @ .050, .527/.553 lift on a 114 LSA. Other parts procedures during rebuild: new double roller timing set, new melling oil pump and high performance engine bearings. Camshaft had a groove cut in the number 5 cam journal per 1965-1966 block oiling requirements. The engine oils well and carries 80lbs oil pressure upon start-up with 10w 30 conventional oil. I did break in the engine for 30 minutes at 2000rpm with Lucas zinc. I disassembled the carb down to bare base for rebuild with rebuild kit. The crankshaft wasre-balancedduring the rebuild. The #6223 forged crankshaft on a digital balancer was corrected to less than one gram imbalance on each end of the crankshaft!

The terms numbers matching has taken on many meanings over the years in the collector car world, depending on who is using it. When I state this car is numbers matching I am communicating that the engine block is the correct casting number3855961, the transmissionis the correct casting number3885010 and both have VIN stamping that match the last six of the car's VIN. I am communicating nothing further by the term number's matching!
