Description:

1956 Chevrolet Other Pickups

Up for sale is my 1956 "Task Force" 3800 series pick up truck. This truck is equipped with a 3.9L (235 cu in) inline six cylinder engine with a floor shift four speed manual transmission. I purchased the truck locally from an older gentleman that had it stored in his garage, prior to that it had been in Nebraska. I cannot verify the mileage, due to the mechanical limits of the the speedometer, however mileage was listed over 100,000 on title when I bought it, so I would guess there are 153,107 miles. Before starting the engine, I removed the oil pan to check for any excessive build up and changed the oil. Distributor was removed and oil pump was primed. In addition to this I also (in no particular order):
  • Installed (6) new AC-Delco spark plugs (Set to Factory Spec.).
  • Installed a new points(Set to Factory Spec.) and condenser.
  • Installed new distributor cap and rotor.
  • Installed (6) new spark plug wires.
  • Installed a new fuel filter
  • Installed new intake/exhaust manifold gaskets
  • Adjusted the valves(Set to Factory Spec.) and installed a new valve cover gasket.
  • Had the carburetor rebuilt by Benchwick Carburetor of Youngstown, Ohio and installed a new carburetor to manifold gasket.
  • Checked the compression -> 150+ psi across all six cylinders with no more than a few psi difference between each
  • Removed the radiator and back flushed until water ran clear. Same was done with engine.
  • New upper and lower hoses, radiator cap, thermostat (Factory temp), and coolant.
  • Transmission oil was drained and replaced with proper viscosity Mobil 1 conventional oil.
  • Rear axle oil was replaced with proper viscosity Mobil 1 conventional oil.
  • Misc. other small items.
The truck runs with good oil pressure and a nice idle. Engine does smoke somewhat when first running but does clear as you drive to an extent. Transmission shifts well into all gears with a strong clutch. There are some leaks and seeps throughout the truc, as to be expected of a vehicle of its age. Brake system works and has not been modified . Tires are older and should be considered for replacement depending on your plans. As for electrical, previous owner made repairs to the wiring in areas however, all lights do work. Of note, the horn, does not work.As for the body/chassis, the truck presents well as a driver and has a pleasing patina to it. Truck has a 9ft step side bed, which is a very unique look. Aside from that detailed in the photos, corrosion is present in areas on the floor (some holes including in the passenger foot pan), cab corners, etc however, the cab mounts and major areas are good. Surface corrosion is present on the interior of fenders and floor bottoms. Rear fenders and steps are especially solid. All glass is in driver quality, however driver's side window is a plastic composite replacement. As for the interior, there are some tears in the seat. Overall, the truck is much better than many which have rotted away and could be an excellent driver or the start to something more. Since I have bought it, it has been plated and insured. I have driven it locally to the store and to car shows where it has always gathered positive attention. Unfortunately, things have changed in my life and I am no longer able to continue my refurbishment of this piece of American history. I love this truck but I must pass it on to someone who can continue fixing it up.
