Harrison Ford's Volkswagen Celebrates 30th AnniversaryWitness Movie Car Volkswagen 1971 Squareback Sedan

Harrison Ford needs no introduction. Known the world around for playing Han Solo and Indiana Jones, if people know he's nearby, they're likely swarming to him. Some of the few people who don't know who he is are the very people his 1985 movie, "Witness”, portrayed - traditional Amish.

Celebrity or no, the vehicle Ford used in the movie created an impression then and creates an impression now. Since it's the 30th anniversary of the classic movie, we're here to celebrate"Witness" and the movie's car, a Volkswagen 1971 Squareback Sedan, that was a big part of it.

The Squareback Sedan, which was noted for its departure from the iconic VW Beetle although it retained the Beetle's wheelbase and rear-engine layout, was manufactured for sale between 1961 and 1973. Ford's character, John Book, drove it to an Amish farm community to protect a child who had seen someone get murdered.

The Squareback's Claim to Fame

The Squareback Sedan has several moments in the movie, like when Ford dances with Kelly McGillis as the car's radio is playing. The movie is also known for its depictions of Amish life, as well as the grain they keep on the farm, which in the movie's climax is used for quite a different purpose than it's normally intended.

As a matter of fact, the Squareback Sedan (various models) has made the rounds in Hollywood. Some other TV or movie treats it's been a part of:

  • "Herbie Rides Again" (1974 movie) - The Squareback was a background vehicle in this movie, but Herbie has deep roots with VW, as the famous movie car is a Beetle.
  • "Matlock" (TV show from 1986-1995) - a 1970 Squareback participated in a background shot in an episode that aired during the fourth season. We like to think those good VW vibes led to justice being served in the courtroom with lawyer Ben Matlock.
  • "Magnum P.I." (TV show from 1980-1988) - Again, a Squareback (1968) was a background vehicle in an episode, but you've got to respect Tom Selleck's mustache he sports in this fun detective show.
  • "Summer of Sam" (1999 movie) - A 1971 Squareback makes a cameo appearance in the Spike Lee film about the infamous "Son of Sam" murders in 1977 New York.

When it's all said and done, "Witness" is the clear winner for most Squareback Sedan exposure during a TV show or film. In fact, the contest's not even close. Which is why we salute the 30th anniversary of this classic design and the movie that featured it

MOVIE FANS EVERYWHERE: "LIGHTS, CAR... ACTION!" You are bidding on the one and only famous light-blue Volkswagen (Squareback-Variant) driven and wrecked by Mr. Harrison Ford in the 1985 widely-acclaimed, ever-popular, Oscar-winning movie, WITNESS. Witness was nominated for 8 Academy Awards. Amongst these nominations included Best Picture, Best Director for Peter Weir, Best Actress for Kelly McGillis, and Best Actor for Harrison Ford. Astonishingly, WITNESS is the ONLY film in Harrison Ford's historically successful acting career (to present date) in which he was ever nominated for an Academy Award! Such films included such famous blockbusters as the originalSTARWARStrilogy, Blade Runner, Regarding Henry, etc. amongst numerous other well-received films. This year and season marks the twentieth anniversary of the principle filming of WITNESS. This historic vehicle is being sold "AS IS." It is arguably perhaps the most famous of Harrison Ford movie props next to his Stetson hat and bullwhip from the popular Indiana Jones trilogy of movies. WITNESS is only the second movie in which Harrison Ford wrecked an automobile. In George Lucas' 1950ish American Graffiti, Harrison Ford's character of Bob Falfa did in another vehicle during a drag race in which he 'barrelrolled' it over with his date for the evening (played by Cindy Williams) still inside. Also, later, in theStar Warsseries, Harrison plowed his renegade StarWars' starship, the Millenium Falcon, into an asteroid or two while dodging the imperial TIE fighters. What did TIE stand for? 'Twin Ion Engine' of course! Some years later in Seven Days and Seven Nights, Mr. Ford crash landed a DeHavilland Beaver. In WITNESS, however, this little Volkswagen took on an almost spiritual quality in the movie. Indeed, it is a major central character element (if not a character in itself) of it. It was stated by movie critics at the time that if Harrison Ford were not already a star, WITNESS would have made him one. Though the vehicle is presently not running, is has existed in an indoors-protected, gas-tank-empty state ever since the movie finished filming. To reiterate: 2004 marks the twentieth anniversary of the film's principle production, as well as the twentieth anniversary of the release of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. WITNESS was released one year later in early spring 1985."
