1974 Triumph TR6

1974 Triumph TR6

The Triumph TR6 (196876) is a sports car built by British Triumph Motor Company between 1968 and 1976. It was the best-seller of the TR range when production ended, a record subsequently surpassed by the TR7. Of the 91,850 TR6's produced, 83,480 were exported; only 8,370 were sold in the UK. The bodywork was generally similar to the TR4/TR5, but the front and back ends were squared off, reportedly as a result of a consultancy contract involving Karmann.

Born in Coventry England in October of 1974, a consigner stated ONLY 30,000 mile car! 2 owners have had it in their possession throughout its lifetime. It has been garaged during this time, and 15 years ago it was transformed to screaming yellow.

Exterior
Mostly straight rust-free steel panels with good gaps. Dripping in yellow, one almost needs to wear shades when viewing it inside or out. Bumpers are sans their federally mandated crash absorbers, and the car definitely benefits from the lack of them. Badging is correct, although the rear of the car is gloss black where typically it would be a matte black...we will call it creative license. The convertible top, tonneau, and boot, come with this car, and are seen in good condition, with the top being replaced 10 years ago. Also, the original hardtop is provided with this car, although is unrestored and a bit rough. The original hub caps and trim rings adorn all 4 corners and are covered with new non red line tires.

Interior
A wood dash with slight veneer damage stretches across the inside of the car and is topped by padded black vinyl. Essential instrumentation is seen in front of the original steering wheel, and are of course Smiths brand, which was a staple of 1970's Triumphs. Black vinyl buckets, and vinyl door panels make up the remainder of the cockpit, sit comfortably, and are in good condition. Black carpet covers the floor.

Drivetrain
An inline OHV 6-cylinder having 152ci is fed by 2 Stromberg single barrel downdraft carburetors. Electronic ignition, and a stainless steel heat shield to prevent vapor lock has been added.

Undercarriage
Frame and underside are very clean, and some surface rust is present. A stainless steel exhaust cannot be missed, as well as new brake lines, and stave cylinder. Front disc and rear drum brakes provide the stopping power. Front suspension is independent, coil springs, unequal-length A-arms, telescopic shock absorbers (plus anti-roll bar for TR6), and the rear consists of independent, coil springs, semi-trailing arms, lever-arm shock absorbers

A test drive in this Triumph was a blast from the past as this writer owned this very same car. This TR6 runs smoothly, although had to be choked just a bit for smooth idle. The transmission shifted up and down smoothly, and the car started immediately with full choke. Always a snappy handling car, it brought back good memories. Some wind in your hair, and the throaty exhaust sound goes a long way to calm the soul.
