1987 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4x4 Convertible 22RE

1ST GENERATION 4RUNNERSR5CONVERTIBLE:Super clean rust free classic 1987 Toyota 4RUNNER SR5 4x4 runs & drives as good as it looks with less than 200 miles on new 31" radial tires.Comes with clean Arizona title and thousands of dollars in receipts for valuable new parts & labor documenting professional high performance 22RE engine rebuild, rebuilt W56 transmission with new clutch and rebuilt suspension. Anybody couldjump in this truck and drive it coast to coast feeling confident it wouldn't need anything but gasoline. Don't let the mileage fool you, because of the engine & suspension upgrades it runs much quicker, smoother and quieter than stock.HISTORY:This amazing 4Runner was born in 1987 in a factory in Hamura, Japan. Itwas the 2nd year that Toyota offered the Independent Front Suspension (IFS) mini truck and the 4th year of the 1st Generation convertible top 4Runner.
MECHANICALS:This rust free SUV features an exceptionally strong running, professionally rebuilt 22RE (2.4L SOHC) engine with new RV cam, ported and polished rebuilt cylinder head with new timing chain & STEEL GUIDES (the factory guides were plastic) with receipts to document. It's mated to a rugged recently rebuilt Aisin W56 manual 5 Speed transmission with new clutch. Other features include 4 new shocks, 4 new wheel bearings, rebuilt power disc front brakes & power steering with a rebuilt gear box. It drives down the road like a new truck with new tie rod ends and poly bushings in the upper control arms and tight stock rubber bushings in the lowers. It's exceptionally smooth, quiet & peppy with no rattles, no steering wander or suspension slop. It's literally rebuilt to perform better than new.
22RE MULTI-PORT FUEL INJECTION:Legendarily reliable numbers matching 22RE runs like an industrial sewing machine.Starts every time with a click of key. No smoke, no knocks, no leaks, no issues. Excellent gas mileage. Quiet with a new muffler. Better than new oil pressure. Runs cool, better than new, even on 112 degree Tucson summer days, thanks to the new V6 upgrade aluminum radiator which is double the thickness and an inch taller than stock. All the fluids from stem to stern are fresh. Everything under the hood is new or rebuilt, including the battery.
22RE HISTORY:Introduced to the world with much fanfare in the 1983 Celica, these 22RE were the very 1st multi-port fuel injected in line 4 cylinder engines ever produced and were so successful they ran unchanged until 1995. The exhaust has not been modified and still retains the OE spec catalytic converter so it always passes emissions. Engine builders have long admired howthese 22R blocks are famous for being hardened with even more nickle content than old American muscle cars, meaning they can be rebuilt almost indefinitely. There's a grizzled old man who runs around Tucson with a mint old Hilux pickup with engine almost identical to this with 650,000 miles. Many examples with over 550,000 miles are common when you search the net. This one has only 11k miles since rebuilt with new 20 over pistons, new rod and main bearings, refurbished ported & polished cylinder head, new RV cam shaft and rockers, plus new timing chain and steel guides.
5 SPEED W56 MANUAL TRANSMISSION:Rebuilt W56 shifts smooth and concise as designed. The clutch disc, pressure plate, flywheel, throwout bearing and pilot bearing was replaced 11k miles ago when the engine was rebuilt.
2 SPEED GEAR DRIVEN TRANSFER CASE:The 2 speed top shift gear driven transfer is considered one of the strongest ever designed. It engages smooth as expected. The Warn Premium manual lockout hubs work as designed. This is a Toyota after all. Their 4x4 reliability is legendary.
IFS SUSPENSION, WHEELS & TIRES:Stock suspension clears brand new 31 inch Pathfinder All Terrain radial tires mounted and balanced on factory 15x7 aluminum rims painted black. All the shocks are brand new. All of the suspension and drive lines are tight and the brakes are newer on all 4 corners.
DIFFERENTIALS:Both factory differentials are stock with 4.10 gear ratio, open carriers and zero leaks. All the gear oil is fresh.
INTERIOR:The interior is super clean. The seats are original with new covers. Under the covers the fabric is worn with some stains but the cushions are not all blown out. All of the lights, signals and gauges work as designed, with the SR5 interior gauge cluster featuring not only tilt wheel & tachometer but also real time oil pressure, temperature and voltage readings. The heat blows hot. This truck was not born with AC.The factory interior panels are in great shape considering the age. The dash is in exceptional condition for a southwestern truck. There's a dash carpet covering it but underneath on the passenger side dash pad there's softer vinyl that has a couple normal thin heat cracks but is definitely in better shape than most this age. The driver's side dash pad is mint. There's a nice aftermarket stereo system. The rear cargo area carpet is mint with the only blemish being the driver's side plastic cargo door cover is missing. The rear seats are in great shape and are designed to fold down flush to convert the rear cargo area to a pickup truck bed. Importantly the rear tailgate window goes up and down with either the center console switch or the key in the tailgate lock. The only real blemish in the interior is that the headliner is mostly gone.
CONVERTIBLE TOP:The 1st generation 4Runner featured a unique fiberglass removable convertible top that's similar in concept to Broncos, Blazers, Jeeps, Landcruisers, and Ram Chargers. If you've never seen how cool they look with the top off you'll need to Google some images. It can be removed by the average guy but it takes a technique. First you remove the 12 interior bolts holding it down which only takes about 12 minutes with a ratchet wrench and 14 mm socket. Then you plant your hiney up against the tailgate and start slowly sliding it off, centering the weight, about 140 lbs, onto your back and then get it to the ground. Once off you get that open air convertible vibe and a distinct look with that rear factory roll bar exposed. Unlike pickup trucks which are forbidden from driving down Boulevards and Parkways in many municipalities, the 4Runner is considered a station wagon so it's exempt from those restrictions because it came from the factory with a back seat, which if you lift it and run bigger tires is a distinct advantage because the law says that station wagons do not require mud flaps.
FRAME & BODY:
This truck has absolutely no rust, zero, none, except maybe for some typical surface rust on the exhaust components. It's never been wrecked or even wheeled off road in any significant way and there's zero bondo, I mean none. It's had at least 1 repaint and retains several shopping cart dings here and there, at least a dozen, but very minor. There's also some minor dents in the tailgate shown in pics. There's a custom rear bumper and a class III receiver hitch mounted to frame out back with a flat 4 plug connector for trailer lights and a removable clevis receiver hitch. The factory tow/recovery hooks are mounted to the frame in front.
INSURANCE:This truck is eligible for historic plates in any State. That also mean it's eligible for Collector Car insurance from outfits like Grundy Worldwide or Haggerty which only costs $10 per month for a $5,000 full coverage policy. That's right, a stated $5k full coverage insurance policy is only $10 per month and, get this, emissions are forever waived. I repeat. Collector Car Insurance means no more emissions and a cheap monthly nut on full coverage insurance.
OH WHAT A FEELING:
There's many reasons Toyota trucks are so legendary worldwide. It's no accident that no matter what part of the world you look at whenever you see news footage of guerrilla fighter soldiers with AK47s in the back of a pickup it's always a Toyota. Just find a counter-example? That's because Toyota truck reliability is 2nd to none. It's what soldiers count on. That's why Toyota is the only import vehicle ever allowed to compete in NASCAR racing. When Taliban or ISIS fighters tackle US Troops they're not running around in Fords, Dodge or GMC. They're not in Nissans, Subaru, Isuzu or Mitsubishi. No, on the contrary, they're always in Toyota trucks and that's part of the reason their resistance is so stubborn.
Unlike American vehicles of this era, every Toyota truck came with a fully boxed steel frame. Not only is the frame boxed square, meaning super strong, but also every nut, bolt and fastener is fine machine threaded. That's why a 31 year old truck like this has zero rattles and drives so tight. Virtually every American vehicle has coarse threads throughout and a C-channel frame with only the engine and transmissions having fine machine threads so except for some exceptional rare American vehicles, like Early Ford Broncos and some Jeeps with fully boxed frames, nobody in the USA constructed 4x4's with as much engineering integrity as Toyota.
FLAWS & BLEMISHES:Any 31 year old vehicle that hasn't had a frame off restoration is bound to have a few cosmetic blemishes that are hard to show up in pictures in both the interior and exterior. There's numerous tiny shopping cart dings that are hard to see in pictures. There's a couple of small blemishes in the tailgate shown in pictures. There's no spare tire nor jack & tool set but I would suggest a high lift jack mounted between the rear factory roll bar is best. The under bed spare tire carrier assembly is still in place. The biggest interior blemish is the fact the headliner is largely missing as pictured.
JUSTSO YOU KNOW:When you tender an OFFER on eBay it's just like a bid, actually it's equivalent to a BUY NOW simply because if that OFFER is accepted, you've then suddenly "entered into a legally binding contract for sale". That's per the TOS (Terms of Service) agreement you accepted when becoming an eBay member. The point is when you tender an OFFER you need not only be truly committed but also have the funds in place and your wife's permission because, for example, at auction's like Barrett-Jackson if you raise a paddle then renig on a bid they ruin your credit score the same as a loan default. This is not a video game. It takes months of preparation to present a vehicle like this on a public auction. It's no joke. This is serious business. Ebay auctions follow the same protocols and rules as any public auction.
PAPERWORK:
Clean and clear notarized Arizona title is ready to go. Receipts documenting most all the important new parts & labor will be in a packet with the title.
INVESTMENT:Because of their exceptional engineering and reliability these Toyota Hilux pickups, especially the 22RE trucks like this, only go up in value every year even while you drive them, providing one of the best investments in the automotive world today, bar none. Fact is there will never be another made like them. They're 1 off legends, as important as American Muscle cars, and are getting exceptionally hard to find in this condition. If not now then soon this truck will be a bargain at twice the price
CONTACT:Email through eBay or Call52O-Nine 77-O112for any questions prior to clicking which is highly encouraged.
FEEDBACK:If you have ZERO feedback and are serious about this truckthen before doing anything please be sure to call the number above so we can establish that you're not a squirrel. It won't take more than a couple minutes so please just do it or your offer will be cancelled. Unfortunately this is required due to the notorious reputation of eBay rookies for being impulsive non-paying bidders who don't read auction descriptions thoroughly.
BUYER NOTE:For those new to eBay or nervous about buying a vehicle over the internet, that's understandable, but think about these stubborn facts for a moment. I've been selling vintage 4x4's along with vintage parts on eBay for 18 years. Some 15 years ago I happened to sell a vintage Early Bronco to an eBay seller who runs a large scale pawn shop in Philadelphia with tens of thousands of feedbacks and he taught me this important eBay rule of thumb. Every positive feedback is worth about a dollar of trust. That means if you're buying something, say a special vintage carburetor for $300, then ideally the seller will have at least 300 positive feedbacks. This is just an ideal rule of thumb mind you. It's not etched in stone but rather a simple guideline or compass for action. So if there's somebody's selling a $6,000 vehicle with only 32 feedbacks I'd be leery. Doesn't mean it's not legit, it's just that there's not much track record. By contrast if a seller's asking $6k for a vehicle and has more than 12k positive feedbacks like myself, well then you can rest easier for you can ask yourself why would they risk throwing away their whole business model, their decades old hard earned feedback reputation for only $6k? The answer is they wouldn't.
IMPORTANT AUCTION TERMS SO PLEASE READ CAREFULLY.As noted from the outset, per the eBay "Terms of Service" (TOS) that you agreed to when registering your OFFER, should it be accepted, "constitutes a legally binding contract for sale" so don't start clicking if you're not committed to buy with funds in place and wife's permission. Please also make sure the phone number and address you have registered with eBay is current and if you're planning to use PayPal for the deposit that you have liquid funds ready to go that are not in the form of an E-Check which takes 5 or more days to clear, in other words, be a responsible bidder whose got their act together and doesn't have a bunch of excuses.
Inspection prior to bidding is welcome as vintage vehicles are always sold AS IS with no warranty expressed or implied.
PAYMENT TERMS:A non-refundable deposit of $1000 either viaonline PayPal payment orcard over phone through Square is due within 24 hours of auction close.
Full balance of Payment is due within 72 hours of auction close by either direct bank to bank wire transfer, or you can overnight envelope a Cashiers Check, or pay cash in person. PayPal for the full balance is not an option, however a credit or debit card payment through Square.com is, so long as buyer is willing to pay the 3% fees.
SHIPPING:All shipping arrangements and costs are the responsibility of the buyer however we will always help your shipper coordinate the loading to the best of our ability. It all begins by calling the number above. Figure shipping any vehicle East of the Mississippi is about a grand. West is less. We will store the vehicle free for 21 days after sale. There is a $15 per day storage fee thereafter unless other arrangements are pre-dickered. Note that many naive rookie eBayers imagine that they'll jump on a plane to Tucson, pay in cash in person, and drive the truck home. In most cases that's wrong. Not because the truck will have issues but rather because you won't get cheap airfare to Tucson, you won't have legal plates driving home, and the overall trip costs plus gas is way more than you think.
