Description:

1961 Mercury Comet

Thanks for viewing! This auction is for a 1961 Mercury Comet Sedan in two-tone Sultana White and Signal Red. Car has a 3-on-the-tree manual shift. This car has lived its entire life in the borough of Queens and was purchased 10 years ago from the original owners nephew. The car was purchased new by his aunt at Parade Ford in Richmond Hill, Queens in November, 1960.
This car was used in the 2010 episode of "Celebrity Ghost Stories" on the Bio channel for the Rebecca Demornay episode. Shot on location at the now defunct Parkway Hospital, Jacob Riis Park, Belle Harbor and Gil Hodges Bridge in NYC (Queens and Brooklyn).
It has 39,000 original miles on the body and frame but I changed the original tired (and weak!) 144 with a 200 c.i. out of a 1965 Ford Mustang shortly after I purchased it. The motor itself has less than 30k miles on it and was from a California car. It was my daily driver for a number of years, but life got a little hectic, so it will need some tender love and care to get her back on the road where she belongs! NOTE: the car IS currently registered and its inspection tag just lapsed last month. Carb will need a tune up, and there is an exhaust leak - both cause the car to idle rough and sometimes stall out. However, the motor is strong with no knocking, smoke, or blowby whatsoever. Brakes are great, tank was cleaned. E-brake needs to be reinstalled (an NOS cable is included). Tires are in great shape.
The original interior (sans upper drivers side) is in great condition and has held up considerably well over the years! The headliner will need to be replaced, however--as will the windlace. But overall, its a nice example of an original interior with just the right amount of patina. Has a brand new carpet, package tray, and kick panels. All the lights, high beams and signals work.
The dash lights and the original AM tube radio work when they feel like it! Wipers work as well - but just need the blades hooked back up. The battery is new but the terminals will need to be replaced and the wiring given a once over as it sometimes causes the battery to drain.
The car sports what I believe to be most of the original finish. I painted the roof red after purchasing it with single stage enamel. It now has faded and matches the patina of the rest of the car. The car is an original NY/Northeast car and has the typical rust in the typical places. Some of the rust spots looks to be repaired before but will obviously need attention if you plan on making this a clean driver. It never bothered me, so I loved it as is! That being said, the car is pretty damn straight for being almost 60 years old! The floorboards were patched, POR 15 was applied, then sound deadener was installed before a new rug. This car was fixed up to be a "driver" and not a trailer queen!
The bumpers are in spectacular shape with only minor flaking on the front (no pitting). The car has a lot of potential and in the right hands, can be back on the road in no time and thoroughly enjoyed. Either drive as is, restore as you go, or do a ground up or custom resto-mod restoration - the options are endless!
NOTE: This car comes with LOTS of extras, including: FENDER SKIRTS! 5 extra OEM rims, extra fender trim, rear window trim, valve covers (one OEM from the car itself and aftermarket) and the original air cleaner. Some original jack parts, extra "peep" mirrors, bumper brackets, license plate holder, door handle, etc are also included. I will also throw in an ORIGNAL set of NOS early 1960's JC Whitney aftermarket red seat covers and NOS clear protective covers as pictured. ALL of these items will be included and put in the trunk of the car when transported.
However, depending on the transporter load, the extra hood (needs work) and extra front bumper are also included (excellent driver quality or core) if you have a means to take them! The car can be seen in person. Feel free to text or call Chris at 516 - 551 -2487. Thanks!
