202 Made!
1972 Mercury Montego GT, red with a black interior and black vinyl top. Q code 351 Cobra jet, 4 speed car. One 0f 202 made. The car currently has a rebuilt M code 1970 351 Cleveland from a 1970 Mach 1. I have the original engine on a stand that goes with the car. The original motor has the vin stamped on the left upper corner of the rear of theblock that matches the vin on the car. Additionally the date codes on the intake, heads, and block are date coded within 4 days of each other. The block is a 4 bolt main. The original motor will need rebuilt.
The body is very solid. There is some pin hole rust only, no major rustholes at all! There are dents that will need pounded out. The underneath is very solid. The only rust I could find was around the two drain plugs under the rear seat. Nothing major. The bottoms of the quarters and trunk drop offs are excellent. The trunk is solid. The door jams are solid. The bottom of the radiator support is rusted on the passenger side where it bends upward. But overall I would say this car has no major rust issues.
The interior is respectable. The seats were recovered, the dash is nice, the console lid looks a little rough but the console is nice and the headliner is nice. All the glass is descent.
The wheels are 15 inch magnums. The rear wheels appear to be Ford originals and are ok, the fronts are repops and are a bit rusty. The bumpers are straight but show some rust and tarnish. All the trim is there and pretty nice shape but should be polished.
EXTRA PARTS--- I have an NOS front bumper, NOS rear bumper, NOS head light bezels, both sides, NOS grill,I have a pair of rust free and straight doors, plus the original engine all go with the car.
The engine currently in the car was reported to be rebuilt. I don't have any information or receipts on the rebuild. It runs and sounds good. The engine is a 4 barrel motor, DOAE-L, date code 1A27. The clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing are new. The top loader shifts well. The rear was originally a 3.50 open. It now has a posi rear.
This is a very solid, running and driving, project car with lots of potential and extra parts. The car could potentially be driven as it sits. The car would be a nice street car with a paint job. But with 202 made, the rarity and uniqueness of the car warrants a restoration to me. The car sat for a long time and should be thoroughly gone over before being put on the street. The brakes were gone over some time ago. However I'm selling the vehicle as a project car. The car is sold as is with no warranty. Please ask questions, and bid to win, the car will be sold. Delivery available, price on request.
