Description:

1978 Mercedes-Benz 200-Series 240D

This car would be a great restoration project for someone that wants an old Benz to tinker with. I bought the car for the fantastic interior to use in another car, but once I got into it I thought it was too nice to tear apart. I don't have spare time to restore it and my wife wants it out of the driveway, so its got to go. The car has never been wrecked and is all original. There is some minor surface rust in a few places like the hood, but no rot or body filler anywhere. The paint is original. The car runs and drives, but needs a new center support bearing and flex disc on the driveshaft which would take an afternoon and less than $60 in parts. The alternator stopped charging recently, but that is a $100 part and an hour of work as well. I put a new battery in it on 5/20/2017 to move it around the driveway. The odometer does work and 264888 is the actual mileage, so the motor could use a refresh as well. Like any car that is 40 years old it could use a lot of replacement rubber parts throughout. The CV axles and rear end appear to be in good working order and the suspension does feel tight despite the age on it. Brakes are in good working order and the tires all hold air and stay up. The vacuum system appears to be in good working order and all the door locks function properly and the ignition works correctly. I did replace the main vacuum line when I got it because the ignition was not stopping the motor. The glow plugs work and the car will easily start even after months of being parked. The fuel tank has been completely drained and refilled with fresh diesel and the fuel strainer was checked to ensure it was clean. The body and the interior are the best part of the car. The dash has only minor cracks in inconspicuous places. The gauges function, the interior lights work, and the original factory radio works which is very nice. Original seats, carpet, headliner, steering wheel, center console, and rear deck are all in really nice condition. The interior is dry so the car does not leak. The spare tire and jack are with the car as well. The hood hinge on the driver side does not seat properly, but that can be corrected easily.
