Model Description

The 1970 was the last year for high compression, truly full output, and all out performance engines in Corvettes. The model years to follow were more at the mercy of insurance companies, fuel prices, and emission concerns. The 1970 Corvette saw the shortest production time and lowest production numbers for any year of "chrome bumper" Corvettes. Total production in 1970 was only 17,316, which was the lowest since 1962. A strike at GM caused the 1969 model year to run for an extra 4 months so production on the 1970 models did not start until January of 1970. The body shape in 1970 was improved with fender flares to reduce the damage from wheel thrown debris. Many enthusiasts prefer the more pronounced fender flare and wheel opening introduced this year. 1970 also introduced the iconic "egg-crate" grills on the side of the car, which were only used on Corvettes for 3 years and have become a symbol of the "chrome bumper" Corvettes. The interior saw subtle improvements including a redesigned seat for better headroom and better access to the storage area. As in investment, the 1970 model year be particularly great due to the rarity and the fact that this was the last year Corvettes and muscle cars as a whole were purpose built for speed and performance without the limitations from environmental and emission concerns.

Exterior

The Monza Red exterior is in spectacular driver condition. As one can see in the photos, the finish has dazzling gloss, deep shine, and smooth finish. Both doors open and shut nicely. The chrome and other bright look great with and a brilliant finish and no pitting. The wheels and center caps are in excellent condition with a nice finish and no curb rash on the beauty rings. Please note that this Corvette has the correct and original "4-clip" style beauty rings, not the cheaper foreign made replacements. The BF Goodrich Radial TA tires have plenty of tread left. There are a few very tiny blemishes around car that were too small to show up in pictures, but nothing else that is really noticeable from about five feet away. As one can see in the many photos of the underside this car is very clean underneath and has NO RUST ISSUES at all. The frame is totally solid around the "key hole" area in front of the rear tire and we have seen no evident of corrosion around the windshield or "birdcage" area, which are the most common spots for rust on a C3 Corvette. We have included specific photos of the areas most prone to rust to show how nice this car looks.

Window Date Codes

Please note that almost all of the glass on this Corvette, both "Astro Ventilation" door windows and even the pop-out rear window, are date coded and original as each piece predates the car's body build date of June 16, 1970 (F16). Original glass is a good indication that this car has had no major accident history and never sustained significant damage.

Interior

The Saddle Leather interior of the Corvette is in excellent original condition. The seats look just in person as they do in the photos with no excessive wear for the mileage; please note that these appear to be the original seats and skins, not some cheap aftermarket covers or replacements. The carpet is in also in great condition with no stains, holes, or rips. This includes the rear carpet, which is often neglected. The gauge faces are crisp and clean and the lenses are clear. The dash is in great shape with no cracks, fading, or sun damage. The door panels are in good condition overall. The jack and jack handle are stored correctly behind the passenger seat. The spare is also still with the car. This Corvette has never been smoked in; there are no burns marks and no aroma of cigarettes.

Corvette interiors from this era are not known to wear well and the excellent condition of this original interior is a huge testament to the meticulous care and attention this car has received throughout its life and another verification of the low original mileage.

The interior looks just as good in person as it does in the photos.

Mechanical

This Corvette seems to be in very good mechanical condition. The original numbers matching engine starts right away every time, runs well, and idles smooth. It drives great and feels nice on the road and at highway speeds. In the video below one can observe the car accelerating on the highway up to about 70mph, shifting through all the gears, braking to stoplight, and going through some curves. Please note that there are no vibrations or strange noises and the car performs quite well overall. The brakes are responsive and do not pull to one side or the other. The transmission shifts smoothly throughout the power band. The car runs cool and does not overheat. The gauge shows that the engine makes great oil pressure. Also, the engine compartment is beautifully clean, detailed, and correct as one can see in the photos.
The radio works as do all the exterior lights, dash lights, interior lights, horn, wipers, and indicators. The blower for the heater works on all speeds. Even the key buzzer and the "head lamp" warning light on the dash work. The entire vacuum system for the headlights and wiper door works correctly from both their respective switches on the dash and the override switches. They go up quickly, evenly, and with no binding in the mechanism. The entire operation from both switches can be viewed in the video. All of the gauges work with the obvious exception of the clock. Some of the fiber optics work. Not enough can be said as to how much of a pleasure it is to drive this car, especially with the T-Tops out on a beautiful day.
We consistently receive many questions about the purpose of the fiber optics system on 1968 to 1971 Corvettes; exactly what it is and what it does. The sole and main idea behind the fiber optic light monitoring system is to simply confirm that all of the exterior lights, headlights, indicators, tail lights, etc., are working and to make the driver aware of a a burned out bulb. Each lamp on the outside of the car has an actual fiber optic cable the runs to an indicator on the center console. There are nine small indicators on the console and each has its own finer optic cable. When the bulb goes on the light travels through the fiber optic cable and illuminates the corresponding indicator on the console. If someone does not remember to plug the cable end into the lamp housing, does any work to the center console, or if there is a break in a connection or anywhere along the cable, that indicator no longer works. As one can image, over time this is very common.

This Stingray runs and drives as well as it looks.

Overall Condition

Overall, this 1970 Corvette is truly a fantastic car. The beautiful original color combination, excellent condition, the low original mileage, and the great extent to which the numbers match make this Stingray especially important and very hard to duplicate. Numbers matching is extremely important in Corvette pricing and as one can see, this car is quite correct. There are photos of the VIN stamp on the engine block, suffix code, engine assembly date, transmission date, and transmission VIN stamp. In my opinion and based on our experience the "Chrome Bumper" cars from 1968-1972 are the most collectible and hottest in the entire Corvette market right now with 1970 being the most rare and most desirable models. The value of these cars has gone up exponentially in recent years. They are all solid investments for a collector. One could easily enjoy this vehicle for several years and sell it for more than the purchase price with minimal effort.
